Asphalt Repairs by MCI Metro on Diamond Bar Boulevard near Quail Summit Drive Public Works coordinated with HP Communications, contractor for MCI Metro Access Transmission Services (Verizon), to repair an asphalt depression on southbound Diamond Bar Boulevard near Quail Summit Drive.
In early-2020, MCI Metro’s contractors bored underneath the roadway to install new fiber optic cable service; this depression was caused by settlement of a backfilled trench. Public Works staff urged MCI Metro’s contractors to expedite the repairs to avoid the formation of a pothole or other adverse roadway condition. The contractors started the asphalt repair work on Tuesday, March 1 and is anticipated for final restoration by the week of March 14.
Residents are encouraged to report hazards directly to the City’s Public Works Department by calling (909) 839-7040, via the Diamond Bar Connected mobile app, or online at www.diamondbarca.gov/report.

City Employees Take Action to Locate Lost HikerOn February 25, Administrative Assistant Debbie Gonzales received a call from a frantic Diamond Bar resident, Jaya Vemuri, who was lost on one of the Diamond Bar trails. She started off at Sycamore Canyon Park trailhead and somehow managed to make her way off the marked trail and ended up somewhere within Sycamore Canyon.
Fortunately, Recreation Coordinator Ramiro Valderrama was in the office with a team of part-time staff members and offered to assist in locating the hiker. Together, Debbie and Ramiro managed to get an approximate location of where Ms. Vemuri was, plus her mobile phone number, before heading off to begin the search. He was joined by Senior Recreation Leader Adam Gonzales, and Recreation Leaders Ray Lopez, Alex Rayela, and Sophia Paniagua. After nearly 30 minutes of searching, staff was unable to locate the missing hiker, but realized the Apple iPhone has a “Share my Location” feature. At that point, Recreation Leader Sophia Paniagua assisted Ms. Vemuri by talking her through the necessary steps to utilize this feature on her phone. Thanks to modern technology and diligent staff, Ms. Vemuri was located a few minutes later just east of the Racquetball Condominium complex! Although, Ms. Vemuri was tired and thirsty, she was able to walk out with staff who provided water and a ride home without needing medical attention.
On March 1, Ms. Vemuri visited with her rescuers from the Parks and Recreation and Public Works Departments to express her gratitude for their quick response and assistance. The Vemuri family was also in attendance and was extremely thankful for the staff who treated their mother with such compassion. To no one’s surprise, Ms. Vemuri stated she has already returned to hiking the trails with extra water, cell phone in hand, and “share my location” always enabled. Thank you to everyone involved, great job team! As a reminder, before you head off to take a hike, let someone know where you will be and what time to expect you home, and take plenty of water.
