Safe Sharps Disposal

Residents may request home delivery of a sharps container to safely dispose of used needles, syringes, or lancets. Once it is three-quarters full, the container should be sealed and taken to a designated collection site or returned via USPS using the postage paid mail-back option. Locally, a sharps collection box is available outside the entrance of the Diamond Bar/Walnut Sheriff’s Station at 21695 Valley Blvd., Walnut, CA, 91789. To request a sharps container, call Waste Management at (800) 449-7587 or Valley Vista Services at (800) 442-6454.

Household Batteries and Fluorescent Light Bulbs

In California, it is illegal to throw away batteries and fluorescent bulbs in the trash. A law passed in February 2006 covers all Universal Waste, which includes common batteries - AA, AAA, C and D, rechargeable batteries, and fluorescent tubes and bulbs. One option for safely disposing of spent household batteries and fluorescent lights is to take then to Ken’s Ace Hardware store, which has set up a collection area in its garden area. Do not leave behind empty boxes or trash. Ken’s Ace Hardware is located at 303 S. Diamond Bar Blvd., and is open daily 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
