Council Appoints Jennifer “Fred” Mahlke to Fill Vacant Seat
(January 27, 2020) - Diamond Bar City Council has appointed Jennifer “Fred” Mahlke to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of former Council Member Carol Herrera in December 2019.
Mahlke was one of eight applicants who were interviewed by the City Council during a special meeting held Monday, January 27, 2020. The City Clerk’s Office received a total of 10 applications from Diamond Bar residents interested in filling the City Council vacancy; one applicant withdrew their application, and another was out of town and therefore unable to participate in the interview.
Mahlke’s appointment will run through the November 2020 General Municipal Election, which is when the seat is up for election. If interested, Mahlke will have the option to run as a candidate in this election.
Prior to her appointment to the Diamond Bar City Council, Mahlke served on the Diamond Bar Planning Commission since 2015, and previous to that served four years on the Diamond Bar Traffic and Transportation Commission. In her application to be considered for appointment to the council, Mahlke noted traffic, empty business properties and sense of community as the top three critical issues facing Diamond Bar.
Malkhe holds a master’s degree in speech communication from California State University, Fullerton, and has been teaching college-level communication courses since 1997. Since 2010, she has been an adjunct communication professor at Cal Poly, Pomona. Mahlke and her family have lived in Diamond Bar since 1999.
Newly-appointment City Council Member Mahlke will take part in her first Diamond Bar Council meeting next Tuesday, February 4.
A video recording of the January 27 Diamond Bar City Council Special Meeting will be available for viewing on Spectrum Cable channel 3 and Frontier Fios Television Channel 47 on January 28 and 30 at 5 p.m. and February 1 and 2 at 11 a.m. Additionally, it will be made available for archived viewing online www.diamondbarca.gov/meetings starting this Wednesday, January 29.
