Diamond Bar, CA - June 5, 2020) On Thursday, June 4, 2020, more than 500 protesters gathered at the intersection of Diamond Bar Boulevard and Grand Avenue in Diamond Bar in response to the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day. The peaceful protest was deemed to be an unlawful assembly by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department after about 90 minutes when participants left the sidewalk and began to block the intersection, occupying traffic lanes and impeding traffic. Despite numerous warnings, protesters refused to follow orders to disperse. A Deputy did deploy a round of pepper balls into the street when the crowd began to get too close. “The Council is committed to working with our law enforcement partners on ways we ALL can make a difference and impact society now and in the future. And I am grateful for all those that came out to express their views “ said Mayor Steve Tye. By 5:15 p.m., the crowd had dispersed and streets were re-opened with no arrests nor any reports of injuries or property damage.
The City Council supports the First Amendment rights of individuals to assemble peacefully and lawfully to make their voices heard and stands united with the community in opposition of racial discrimination and injustice.
