Mayor Pro Tem Nancy A. Lyons
Nancy A. Lyons was first elected to the Diamond Bar City Council in November 2013 and re-elected in 2018. She served as mayor in 2016 and mayor pro tem in 2015.
Prior to joining council, Mrs. Lyons served two four-year terms on the Walnut Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees, including one term as president. Previous to that, she was an appointed member of the City’s Parks and Recreation Commission, serving in various capacities including chairperson.
Ms. Lyons currently serves as the City Council’s delegate to the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments and Take Back Our Community Coalition, and alternate delegate to the Foothill Transit Board.
Additionally, Ms. Lyons is delegate to the City’s standing committees on Economic Development, Lighting and Landscape Assessment District, Neighborhood Improvement, and Fee Studies. She also serves as the Council liaison to the Diamond Bar Library, Senior Citizens Organization, and alternate delegate to the Chamber of Commerce and Diamond Bar Community Foundation.
For seventeen years, Ms. Lyons taught college-level mathematics and finance at Azusa Pacific University (APU). She is credited with authoring and implementing a successful service learning project between APU mathematics classes and sixth-grade math students of lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
Ms. Lyons holds a Masters of Business Administration from California State University, Fullerton, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Pitzer College, Claremont.
Ms. Lyons has an extensive community service resume that includes serving more than 30 years on the American Association of University Women, 20 years on the Friends of the Diamond Bar Library, 10 years on the Diamond Bar Woman’s Club and most recently joined the Toastmasters International organization.
Among the recognition that Ms. Lyons has received is a Diamond Bar Library Volunteer of the Year award in 2008, and a City of Diamond Bar Outstanding Volunteer award in 2007. She was named Educational Foundation Honoree in 1984-1986.
Ms. Lyons has lived in Diamond Bar with her husband, Larry Smith, since 1979. She has been married for 37 years and has two children, Nathan and Alexandra, both of whom are college graduates.
