Request Building and Safety Plan Check

Prior to filing a plan check with Building & Safety, plans must first be reviewed and approved by the Planning Division for submittal. This two-step process is described below.

Planning Division Clearance

To start the process, log on to the web portal below to complete an online Planning Inquiry Form and attach your plans for preliminary review:

Planning Inquiry Form:

Certain types of projects require formal approval from the Planning Director (or designee), Planning Commission and/or City Council prior to plan check submittal.  Examples include, but are not limited to, new single-family residences, large residential additions (e.g., 50% of the size of original structure), accessory dwelling units (ADUs), massage establishments, veterinary clinics, tutoring centers and martial arts studios.  Other projects may not be allowed in the zoning districts in which they are proposed.  The Planning clearance step helps save valuable time by enabling us to verify whether or not you are subject to these restrictions prior to plan check submittal.

After submitting your Planning Inquiry Form, a planner will confirm that you are clear to submit your plans into plan check, or will contact you if you are subject to a formal Planning approval process prior to plan check submittal, and to provide you with appropriate direction.

Building Plan Check Submittal

Upon receiving Planning Division clearance, you may start the formal plan check process by logging on to the web portal below and following the submittal instructions:

Building Permit Application:

Electronically submitted plans must be “stapled” as one set, rather than multiple pdf or AutoCAD files.  Depending on the scope of work, required plans will usually include floor plans, structural plans and energy calculations, and may include, but not be limited to, an erosion control plan and energy calculations.

Your application will be reviewed by staff and fees and/or next steps in review process will be provided to you via email.
